The Bessie Monster, also known as South Bay Bessie or simply Bessie, is a legendary sea creature believed to inhabit Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes in North America. Bessie is often compared to other famous lake monsters, like the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, and has been part of regional folklore since at least the 18th century. Descriptions of Bessie vary, but many witnesses claim she resembles a serpent-like creature with a long, snake-like body that can be up to 30 to 40 feet in length. Some reports also mention a large, round head Sightings are most commonly reported in Lake Erie, especially in the South Bay area near Ohio. This is why she is often referred to as “South Bay Bessie.”
The first documented sighting dates back to 1793, when French settlers allegedly saw a large serpent-like creature while crossing Lake Erie. Since then, there have been sporadic reports of sightings, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The creature is said to surface from the water and sometimes be seen swimming near boats or shorelines. It has never been known to harm anyone, though its size and appearance have certainly startled witnesses.
