Hey folks, welcome to Spooky Appalachia! This week we have a story sent in by a fan who had an odd encounter on their honeymoon last year in 2023.
Right after our wedding, my husband and I headed off to our honeymoon destination, which was a beautiful treehouse in the middle of the Appalachian woods. Our wedding ended late, and we still had a bit of a drive to get there, so by the time we got there, it was about 12 in the morning.
We pulled up a long driveway to get to the treehouse and felt the car bump over something. The people who own the plot of land made it very clear that we need to be careful in the driveway, as it is technically part of a National Park and damaging the scenery could cause the property owners to have to pay fees. My husband was worried that he had messed up the driveway, so he parked the car in the middle of the driveway (which, by the way, was surrounded by dense woods) and got out to check the road.
He doesn’t believe in the paranormal, but I absolutely do, and I’ve had many experiences myself. Everything in me was telling me to stay in the car, but I got out with him because I know the rules about what not to do in the woods of Appalachia, and I wanted to make sure he didn’t start whistling or anything.
As we were walking down the driveway, I started hearing loud footsteps all around us. Of course, it could’ve been an animal, but when I would turn one way, the sounds would start coming from the other way. I felt like we were being toyed with, so I started pretending that I didn’t hear the footsteps, because “if you hear it, no you didn’t.”
Once we had confirmed that we hadn’t messed up the driveway, we walked all the way back and climbed up into the treehouse. The whole way back, I felt like something was following us. I just had that eerie sense that something weird was going on. It got to the point that I was actually hyperventilating. When my husband was unlocking the door to the treehouse, I swear I heard multiple pairs of feet RUSHING toward us with heavy thuds on the ground, and absolutely nothing (that I could see) was there. At that point I urged him to hurry up and get us inside, and thankfully he did. When we got inside, the creepy feeling I had instantly went away. I looked above the door frame and noticed that there was an upside down horse-shoe. In Appalachian folk magic, upside down horse-shoes are usually placed above doors in order to keep dangerous entities out of one’s home. I wonder if it was placed there for a reason. We had a lovely honeymoon, and nothing else creepy happened, but I still get chills when I think about this experience!
