Back in the early 90s, around 1993, my ex-husband and I moved into a new duplex apartment. We entered through a front door that led to a small foyer; immediately in front of you was a staircase leading up to our living space. To the left were two interior doors that were permanently padlocked the landlord had assured us they couldn’t be opened from either side.
We worked the night shift, so we were used to odd hours, but things started getting strange almost immediately. Every morning, I would wake up to find every single item from our bathroom: the shampoo, soap, conditioner, even our toothbrushes perfectly lined up in front of our bathtub. I thought my husband was playing a prank, but he was just as baffled as I was.
Then, there was the night we were watching a movie with a friend. We had an old 90s stereo setup with a double cassette deck. As we sat there, the “play” button on the tape deck suddenly pushed down with an audible click as if an invisible finger had pressed it and music blasted through the room. We all saw it happen. Our friend started calling it our “haunted apartment” after that.
But the real event, the one that forced us to move, happened around 3:00 a.m. one night. We were in bed, the lights were off, and we heard our front door open and close downstairs. We assumed it was a friend stopping by, even though no one had a key. We jumped up, hurried to the top of the stairs, and looked down into the dark foyer, which was only dimly lit by the streetlights outside.
Standing at the bottom of the stairs was a man.
He was incredibly dark a void of a figure wearing a long black trench coat and a black hat. I couldn’t make out any facial features, but from the angle of the hat, I felt like he was looking directly up at us. Before I could even say a word, he turned to the left and walked straight through those padlocked double doors leading to the downstairs apartment.
My ex-husband bolted down the stairs, turned on the light, and began inspecting the doors. He looked at me, pale, and said, “There was a guy in here.”
That’s when I knew I wasn’t dreaming. We inspected those doors until we were blue in the face. They were still securely padlocked. There was no way anyone could have gone through them, and they certainly hadn’t walked back out our front door, as we would have seen them and heard the heavy door open. We never slept that night, and we moved out before the end of the month.
When I asked my ex to describe what he saw, he told me he saw a man in a black hat and trench coat walk through those doors. He saw the exact same entity that had haunted my sleep paralysis episodes years earlier. I hadn’t told him a single word about those nightmares, yet we both saw the same thing. Looking back, that apartment felt like it had a heavy, negative energy. It seemed like everything started going wrong as soon as we moved in.
I’ve never seen it in person since, but it changed my understanding of reality forever. It wasn’t just a nightmare anymore; it was something real, something that didn’t belong, and something I hope to never encounter again.
