History of St. Albans Sanitarium
The property was originally built in 1892 by William H. Miles as an elite Lutheran boys’ school. However, the school struggled with severe discipline issues, intense hazing. It was forced to close it’s doors in 1911 due to finical and openation strains.
In 1916, the building was purchased and converted into a psychiatric hospital. The facility became heavily overcrowded and underfunded. Like many psychiatric institutions of the era. The hospital was moved to another facility in the early 2000s.
Alleged Haunts and Paranormal Activity
Because of its tragic history, St. Albans is widely regarded as one of the most active and haunted locations on the East Coast. Common reports from visitors and paranormal investigators include:
The East Wing Restroom: Known as the site where multiple patients tragically lost their lives, visitors today frequently report sudden drops in temperature, overwhelming dread, and unseen physical touches.
The Basement and Hallways: Phantom footsteps, shadow figures, disembodied crying, and electronic equipment failing instantly are routinely documented in the building’s lower levels and corridors.
Aggressive Energies: Some areas of the building particularly former wards are reported to carry an oppressive atmosphere where visitors experience sudden nausea, intense emotional shifts, or feelings of being watched and pushed.
