Deep within the murky waters of northern New Jersey’s Lake Hopatcong, it’s said there’s a giant creature that has lurked in the region’s folklore for over a century. Known to locals affectionately as “Hoppie”. According to historical accounts dating back to the late 1800s, Hoppie is a massive, snake-like entity measuring a staggering 40 to 50 feet in length. Its body is shielded by slick, dark black skin with a pale, dirty-white underbelly, allowing it to move with a fluid, slithering grace through the deep water. But its most terrifying and defining feature is its head: witnesses describe it having a horse-like head, complete with massive, saucer eyes and most bizarre of all deer-like antlers.
In August of 1894, the monster’s reputation was cemented when it stalked a fisherman’s boat. Another local boater, witnessing the 40-foot beast, raised his .38 caliber rifle and fired directly at the creature’s head. The heavy round allegedly ricocheted off its thick skull as if it had struck an armored plate. Adding a chilling layer of “high strangeness” to the legend, the stunned marksman claimed the creature didn’t retreat in pain; instead, it stared right at him, winked, and slipped silently back beneath the dark waves.
The Beast’s reputation isn’t just dusty newspaper archives of the 19th century; it is reinforced by unsettling, modern-day encounters. In November of 1999, two witnesses experienced the terrifying reality of the lake’s depths when they were nearly swept off their dock by a pitch-black, six-foot-tall wave that seemed to erupt from a dead calm. The encounter took a frightening turn when one of the men plunged into the freezing water. He surfaced a moment later in absolute panic, reporting that he felt something immense grab him from beneath the surface, a chilling reminder that something predatory was sharing the water with them.
To this day folks still report seeing the creature, in 2014 there was a big wave of sightings but it turned out to be a 16 foot anaconda released by a prankster.
