When I was a kid there was an old house Cross Creek nobody wanted had nothing to do with
because it was owned by a witch. People thought the house was cursed. Back where I grew up,
There were roads and things, but there were still a whole lot of old paths that people still used from time to time. Nevertheless, there was one old house across the creek. Where we lived we all lived on one side of the creek. If you cross the creek, you go back there where they used to log stuff. But if you kept going, you went back in there. You came up on an old field, big old field, and there’s a house sitting at the edge of it. A really small house, but everybody always said, stay away from it.
People said that a witch woman lived there, a long time ago. The house itself was old as dirt.
I mean, REAL old. Funny thing was, it was in real good shape, but nobody took care of it,
and the field it was in always looked like it was freshly cut, but nobody ever, ever cut it and you couldn’t really get a mower back to it because the only way to get to it was a little footpath that was about a foot and half wide.
Anyway when I was a kid, we walked back there once it was me and my parents. It wasn’t uncommon for folks to walk to it and we did that day. I told my parents about how I heard most folks stay away from it. I also told them that I heard that there was a witch that was buried somewhere on the property. Rumor was she was buried with a diamond on her finger but nobody knew where exactly she was buried. Some folks thought she was buried under the house.
Well, we went into the house and there were still pictures hanging on the walls. It almost looked like the eyes from these pictures were following you or they were just staring, looking into your soul. Dad went over and took one of the pictures off the wall. Me and Mama both told him hey don’t do that, but he did it anyway.
As soon as he walked through the doorway out, mama hollered at him, his hand was a dripping blood that picture the glass had shattered and cut him. I mean, it cut him, good boy, he was bleeding like a stud hole.
He still wanted to take the picture he finally old why and it was to show the picture to my great grandpa. Back in when I was pretty little, his grandpa was still alive. He said he wanted to see if he knew any of these people on the wall. So he ended up taking it home even though everybody was trying to tell him to take that picture back. Leave it be. Take that picture back. Oh no. He wasn’t having none of he was taking that to his grandpa.
Funny thing was, he showed the picture to his grandpa. And a lot of the old timers that are on our side of the creek, that were an area.
I remember one old fella he showed it to said that he was going hunting and said he had to cross that field to get to his hunting spot. He was talking about he could have gone the other way, but that way was a mile a lot shorter. He said it was just getting wrecking daylight as he cut through the field and said he saw a white mass like thing. He said it looked kind of like a person and kind of not. He said it looked like it was walking around slowly in the field, then he watched it for a minute and it looked like it took off running.
Weeks after that, Lord, anything that could possibly go wrong did. And finally, one day, mom finally brought in, told him to get that picture back over there now. He said, Oh, maybe you hear it there too. She said, Now, well, he listened. You take it back over there, you hang it back up exactly where it was and you apologize. Maybe if you went back over there
and hung it up and apologized then things would go back to normal.
