The Squonk is a mythical creature from Pennsylvania folklore, particularly associated with the state’s heavily forested areas, such as the Hemlock forests in northern Pennsylvania. The legend goes that due to its loose fitting skin and being covered in warts. It’s said to closely resemble a pig with crooked tusks and yellow skin. It is ashamed of its appearance and often spends its time crying due to this.
Hunters have tried cornering and catching the creature only to find that it’s capable of dissolving completely into a pool of its own tears. One encounter with the creature that comes up the most is one day a lone man was out on a hunt hoping to score some game animals. It was nearing the end of the day and he hadn’t had any luck whatsoever. He sadly started hedging back to his truck empty handed when he saw the Squonk.
The hunter didn’t know what exactly it was he saw when he came up on the ugly pig-like creature. It tried frantically to escape but the skilled hunter was too fast for it and he managed to scoop it up and toss it in a bag.
The hunter began to head back towards his truck when he heard the creature beginning to sob. When he was about half way back to his vehicle he noticed the bag felt suspiciously light so he decided to check it. Then to his surprise the bag was empty and completely soaked. The only explanation was the creature wept itself into a puddle and speeded right through the bag!
There are many stories like this of hunters catching the creature with similar outcomes. Let us know if you’ve had an encounter!
