When I was in my fifties, I ran a cleaning business and had five different ladies whose houses I cleaned regularly. One particular morning, I woke up early to head out to a client’s house, and the date made it feel extra eerie—it was Halloween day. To make things even spookier, the address was out on Brimstone Road in Coolville Ohio.
I had been out to her house several times before, so I was completely familiar with the route and the area. As I was driving out the road that morning, I came to a big pasture field on my left and noticed a guy standing up ahead right by the fence. He was working away on it, and since it was a cool morning, I remember thinking it was strange that he was out there wearing just a t-shirt and jeans. I had never seen him out there before.
As I got closer, I got a really good look at him because he was standing right off the side of the road. When I drove past, I looked right into his eyes and gave him a wave. He looked straight back at me.
But the second I went past him, something told me to check my rearview mirror—and he was just gone.
I slammed on the brakes. The pasture area was wide open, just acres of flat land with nowhere for a person to run off to, and nothing on the other side of the road either. He had literally vanished into thin air. I put the car in reverse and backed way up, going back and back and back, searching the whole stretch, but there was nowhere he could have gone.
Sitting there alone in the car, the realization washed over me and gave me an absolute jolt: I was out on Brimstone Road on Halloween morning, and I had just seen a ghost.
When I finally got to my client’s house and was cleaning for a bit, she came home for lunch. I told her the whole story about what had just happened on the road. Without missing a beat, she looked at me and said, “Oh, that was Mr. So-and-So. He’s been gone for years. You could always see him out there working on his fence.”
Even now, just telling that story gives me cold chills.
