Unlike the winged, silhouette of the Jersey Devil, the Gator Man is described as a nightmare of the pure reptilian kind. The most widely cited “incident” occurred late one July evening in 1973, near the outskirts of Newton.
A local high school student was walking along a drainage ditch that connected to a series of marshy ponds near a defunct quarry. He described hearing a sound he initially dismissed as “heavy, wet footsteps” in the tall grass—a rhythmic, slapping sound, as if someone were walking in oversized, water-logged boots.
When he turned his flashlight toward the sound, he didn’t see a person. Instead, he caught a reflection from two unblinking, amber-colored eyes set low to the ground.
