Back in 2003, in a remote part of North Carolina not far from Mayfield Road, I had an encounter that has stuck with me to this day. Strangely enough, it happened along the same road where I would later have a Bigfoot sighting though that’s another story entirely.
Ruffin NC Winged Humanoid sighting: It was about 1:30 in the morning. I was riding in the front seat of a car with a friend, while two other people were in the back. The folks in the back weren’t paying attention, but my friend and I both saw it and recently, when we talked about it again, he remembered every detail exactly as I did.
At that time, the road had trees arching overhead, forming a tunnel-like canopy, but the space above the lanes was clear maybe twenty-six feet wide. That’s when we saw movement above the treetops. At first, we thought it was a large bird, but as it swooped lower, we realized it was far too big. There are no condors here, and even our largest birds, like buzzards, don’t come close to this thing’s size.
It dropped down over the road, so low that it passed right in front of the car’s hood. We lost sight of it for just a split second, and then it rose over the hood, the windshield, and the roof without making a sound, without flapping its wings, and without touching the car.
And that’s when I got a clear look.
The figure had the shape of a human two arms, two legs, a torso, and a face but it was dressed in a way that made the whole thing even more unsettling. It seemed to be wearing a wide, flat-brimmed hat, the kind overseers once wore on plantations. A long coat, like a duster or trench coat, trailed behind it, trimmed with what looked like fox fur at the neck. The pants or breeches were old-fashioned and torn above the knee.
Its skin had a grayish hue, its hair was long and straggly, and its cheekbones were high. The mouth formed a wide grin, but the eyes were the most disturbing part either pitch-black pits or solid black eyes that filled the sockets completely.
We saw it from only three or four feet away close enough to take in every detail from head to bare feet. Then it was gone, vanishing upward into the night sky. We stopped the car, looking out the windows and scanning the sky, but saw nothing.
The encounter reminded me of the Bigfoot sighting I would later have on this same road, just a few hundred feet away. That creature, covered in shaggy brown and gray fur, seemed less menacing. Neither it nor the winged humanoid made a sound or gave off any smell. But the winged one… that thing felt threatening, even though it never attacked.
It’s been two decades, but the image of that face and the moment it passed over the car remains as vivid as if it happened last night. I still have no idea what it could have been. If anyone has answers, I’d love to hear them.
