“Satan’s Bridge,” officially known as Berry Hill Bridge, is a notorious spot for urban legends and paranormal claims on the border of Danville, Virginia, and North Carolina. It is located on Berry Hill Road, crossing the Dan River.
Here are the creepy details and stories associated with it:
1. Occult Rumors and Rituals
The bridge earned its nickname due to its long-standing reputation as a meeting place for occultists and satanic groups.
- Graffiti and Sigils: For decades, visitors have reported finding the bridge covered in graffiti, including pentagrams and “666.”
- Sacrifices: Local lore claims that animal sacrifices were once performed there, with remains allegedly left on or under the bridge.
2. Witnessed Spirits and Apparitions
Several specific ghostly encounters are tied to the bridge and the surrounding woods:
- The Hanging Man: One of the most common stories involves the spirit of a young man who supposedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the bridge (or a nearby tree). Witnesses claim to see his spectral form swaying in the air.
- The Headless Woman: Legend tells of a woman who was struck by a train on the tracks near the bridge during the Great Depression. Locals say her spirit walks the tracks and the bridge at night carrying a lantern, searching for her missing head.
- The Cloaked Figures: Many thrill-seekers have reported seeing shadowy, hooded figures standing at the edge of the woods or peering out from the dense vine-growth surrounding the riverbanks.
- “Red Eye”: Some stories mention a creature or entity with glowing red eyes that stalks the area, often referred to as “Old Red Eye.”
3. Audio and Sensory Phenomena
- Phantom Cries: Visitors often report hearing the sound of screaming or crying children coming from the river or the woods, which some tie to a dark legend about a man named Elias Frisk who allegedly murdered children in the area.
- The Unnatural Wind: Paranormal investigators have noted a “howling wind” sound that becomes louder as you approach the bridge, even when the surrounding trees are perfectly still and there is no breeze.
- Heavy Atmosphere: There is a recurring report of a “thick silence” or a sudden drop in temperature when walking onto the span.
Related “Haunted” Sites Nearby
If you visit, you’ll find that Satan’s Bridge is part of a “triple threat” of local hauntings:
- Gravity Hill: Located at the nearby intersection of Oak Hill Road and Berry Hill Bridge Road. Legend says if you put your car in neutral, the ghost of a hanged witch will pull your car uphill to her house.
- The Witch’s House: The ruins of an old structure nearby are said to be the home of the witch mentioned in the Gravity Hill legend, where people report hearing disembodied footsteps.
A Note for Visitors: The bridge is a public road, but the surrounding woods are often private property. Locals also warn that the bridge has occasionally been a spot for vagrants or illegal activity, so it’s generally advised not to visit alone at night.
Stories from fans:
Story 1:
About 63 years ago, a boyfriend decided to take me to Satan’s Bridge and thought he could scare me.
We were young. I was 15 and he was 16 and a new driver . It was just turning dusk in September of 1964 and a nice little breeze was blowing across that old metal bridge. I hop out of his 1933 black roadster and grab his hand . I’m tugging him along telling to hurry up but he’s not willing to go on. So I leave him and look over the side and there in the tall grass below me I see movement, I climb up a little more to get a better look and I see something like fog swirling in that tall grass! It started to fill out until it was a man’s form, dressed in old work coveralls with no shirt. He materialized right in front of my eyes. The wind was stronger and I could hear it whistling under the bridge.
My date was almost screaming at this point “come on, come on! Let’s get out of here!”
We ran back to his old car and he couldn’t get it started! He tried and tried. Dead!
By then that foggy being was starting to climb over that metal bridge railing, one booted leg then the other until it was sitting and looking directly toward us, as he put his arms and hands to push himself forward the car magically started! My date whipped the car around and we were speeding away.
I never looked back and have never been back to this day!
Story 2:
As a teenager me and a friend of mine were traveling down the highway and we turned off on to Satan’s bridge rd. As our lights hit what we thought was a deer, the deer stood up on two legs and flexed it’s shoulders like a man after a hard days work. Then it started to turn to look at us over it’s shoulder but stopped short, then strode into the pine swamp off the edge of the road. It was 7 1/2′ tall long graying to tawny brown fur, dark to black skin, and the hair on its arms was sparse enough to see the muscles rippling under the skin.
Story 3:
I used to fish under the old bridge Satan’s Bridge many times back in the 60s and early 70s. There was a house near Gravity Hill run down, people call it a witch house. I would randomly hear singing while out in the quiet fishing, then look over at that house to see a blue light in one of the upstairs windows. The house had no electricity running to it. I showed this to several of my buddies who also witnessed it.
Story 4
I was bored one night after a party and headed out towards Satan’s bridge. I had my windows down, and I started to hear what sounded like a muscle car from the late 60s-early 70s, my thought was a Chevelle or nova but the sound but it could’ve been anything, as this area was known for street racing, so I thought I had somehow got caught in one of those. Even though I couldn’t see anything in the pitch black. The closer I got to Satan’s bridge road the sound of the car got.louder, it was right on me gearing down, wide open, I still can’t see headlights, no.car… as I slow to turn off I hear it get in the other lane, bounce over the train tracks with both sets of wheels then crested a low hill as it got back over to the right lane, and then it just went completely silent. Ironically my mom’s friend met his end in a street race at the top of that road. I often wondered did I experience echoes of his past??
Story 5
Back in 2022 I was driving through late one night when I was coming up on the bridge I noticed a figure standing in the middle of it. As I got closer I noticed it was a man wearing one of those horse masks. I slowed to almost a stop, and the man slowly looked over at me, then took off running and he jumped over the bank once he got across the bridge. I don’t know if this was a prank or what but it was a weird experience.
Story 6
My ex girlfriend went out there a few years back and I don’t know if she conjured something or what but she did something with her friends and took pictures there. The pictures revealed candles flaring up on the bridge, orbs of light and also photos of mist that appear to have faces and creatures in them. It also wasn’t foggy that night.
Story 7
2005. Driving my friends around town at night to listen to music and hangout. We drove out towards the bridge.
I cut my car off on the bridge. We were filming for fun and noticed shining orb started floating by.
After noticing this we went back to my car and I couldn’t get it to crank back up. Try again. Barely turning. Then a 3rd time. It’s dying out even more.
Then, we hear a car racing towards us. The orb gets closer. My radio turns back on. My car cranks then we book it out there my headlights are strobing as we’re getting chased and whatever it was chasing us disappeared after leaving the area.
Story 8.
I’m the guy that has the wild story about satan’s bridge. Of course you’ve heard the story about the prom date that died in a car crash on the bridge. That was told in some sort of ghost story movie that was older. This story though is a bit different.
I was 18 at the time and had a 2 door Honda civic. I would pack my friends in and we would cut up around Danville all the time because there was never really anything fun to do. This particular day we decided to go to satans bridge and we had been there many times before. Never before had we had anything happen or seen anything outside of the ordinary.
It was a foggy day and dreary. I had the sunroof open because I enjoyed the cool air. My friends were a bit on the wild side so they said let’s play Nile, a death metal band, while we go there. We pull on the berry hill rd which is a way to get there from Danville. Remember it’s foggy so I completely miss the road that has the bridge on it and drive past it. I get to an another road to turn around and I feel kind of sick. I hear what sounds like a person screaming as if they were being burnt alive. I envisioned in my head which was something that never happened before and hasn’t happened since. I stop the car and look around to see if someone was hurt. No one around. I get back in the car and all my friends were weirded out by me but laughed it off. I begin driving back to the road and feel sick again and instantly started crying. I couldn’t go down that road. I drove past it and everyone was yelling go back. I couldn’t.
We just drive back into town but on two occasions we heard whispers into the sunroof from outside. We all heard it. No one was messing around. All of us were terrified. I drop off my friends just to straight home.
When I get home, my dad stopped by my room and asked me what I did that night. Mind you, before I even talked to him, I never said where I went or what happened. I tell him just that we went to Satan’s bridge. Nothing else. He then tells me “your aunt had a friend that was in an accident where they burnt to death in the car.” I then spill the beans and tell him everything that happened. He nonchalantly says, “yeah, I believe it” and walks off.
